How Much Is Your Home Worth?

I've been selling real estate in the East Metro for over thirteen years, and Lake Elmo is one of those places I never get tired of talking about.
It's not the easiest community to describe to someone who hasn't spent time here. It doesn't have a walkable downtown or a trendy main street. What it has is something harder to manufacture: a genuine small-town character, an extraordinary amount of preserved open space, and a community that actually knows its neighbors. Once people find it, they tend to stay.
If you're considering a move to Lake Elmo, or you're simply curious what life here actually looks like beyond the listing photos, this is the guide you can refer to.
The Vibe
Lake Elmo sits in Washington County, roughly twenty minutes from downtown St. Paul. It's technically part of the Twin Cities metro, but it doesn't feel like it — and that's exactly the point for most people who choose to live here.
The community has made a deliberate, long-term commitment to preserving its rural character. A significant portion of Lake Elmo's land is protected open space, which means the density and development pressure that have reshaped many east metro communities haven't changed the fundamental feel of this place. You still see horse properties, hobby farms, and wide open sky in between the newer neighborhoods.
The people who move here are generally looking for lots of space, peace and quiet, and a slower pace — without giving up the access and amenities of the metro. It's a trade-off that works extremely well for the right buyer. Commute times to St. Paul and Minneapolis are reasonable, the infrastructure has improved significantly in recent years, and the schools are well-regarded.
What it isn't: urban, walkable, or dense. If you want coffee shops on every corner or a five-minute walk to a restaurant, Lake Elmo is probably not your place. If you want to sit on a large lot, watch the sun set over a pond, and actually hear the crickets at night, it might be exactly right.
The Parks
This is where Lake Elmo genuinely stands apart from almost any community its size in the metro suburbs.
Lake Elmo Park Reserve is the crown jewel — a 2,165-acre Washington County regional park that sits right in the heart of the community. It offers swimming and non-motorized boating on Eagle Point Lake, miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, a campground, and an off-leash dog area. In the summer, the outdoor yoga sessions at the North Pavilion draw a regular crowd. In the fall, the colors in the park are stunning.
Olson Lake and the surrounding Tri-Lakes area offer some of the most sought-after recreational lake access in Washington County. The Tri-Lakes community — centered around Lake Jane, Lake Olson, and Half Moon Lake — is known for its annual water ski show, neighborhood events, and a tight-knit community feel that's rare to find on a lake group of this size.
Gateway State Trail runs along the northern edge of the community, connecting Lake Elmo to St. Paul and Stillwater via a paved multi-use trail that's popular with cyclists, runners, and inline skaters.
Pebble Park offers a local green space and additional trail connections for residents in newer neighborhoods like North Star. And for families with younger kids, the community parks throughout Lake Elmo, including parks within newer developments, offer well-maintained playgrounds and open green space within walking or biking distance for most residents.
The Restaurants & Local Favorites
Lake Elmo doesn't have a dense restaurant scene, but what it has is a handful of genuinely excellent establishments that locals love.
The Lake Elmo Inn is the anchor. It has been a destination restaurant in the East Metro for decades, known for its thoughtful menu, beautiful setting, and special occasion atmosphere. The Innside the Bottle wine dinner series has developed a loyal following, and the dining room is the kind of place that makes you slow down and enjoy the evening. If you live in Lake Elmo and haven't been, add it to your list right away!
For more casual dining, residents tend to head to neighboring Woodbury or Stillwater depending on the direction and the occasion. Woodbury offers a wide range of options — from quick weeknight dinners to sit-down spots — while Stillwater brings a charming historic downtown with waterfront dining along the St. Croix River. Both are fifteen to twenty minutes from most Lake Elmo neighborhoods.
The Lake Elmo area is well-served for everyday errands, with grocery options, hardware stores, and services conveniently accessible without a long drive. The community is close enough to the metro for access to everything, while far enough away to feel like you've genuinely left it behind.
The Neighborhoods
Lake Elmo's residential character has evolved significantly over the past decade. The community now includes a mix of established acreage properties, lakefront estates, and newer planned neighborhoods — each with a distinct feel.
The Tri-Lakes Community
Limerick Village is in early development stages as of 2026, with infrastructure underway and a diverse mix of housing product planned. This is one to watch for buyers who want to get into the community at the ground level of a new neighborhood.
Bridgewater Village offers another thoughtfully designed newer community, with a range of home styles and price points that have attracted a mix of move-up buyers and longtime metro residents looking for more space.
The established acreage and rural areas of Lake Elmo — particularly around the lake corridors and along the county roads — represent some of the most distinctive and desirable properties in Washington County. These are the homes buyers often describe as "what I've always pictured" — large lots, mature trees, privacy, and character that simply can't be replicated in a new development.
What Makes People Stay
I've worked with a lot of buyers who moved to Lake Elmo thinking it was a practical choice — good value, more space, reasonable commute. And then a few years later, when I check in with them, the conversation always sounds the same. They love it more than they expected to. The community events, the park access, the quiet, the neighbors — it adds up to something that's genuinely hard to find.
Lake Elmo isn't for everyone, and that's part of what makes it special. The people who choose it tend to want exactly what it offers — and they find that it delivers.
If you're exploring whether Lake Elmo might be the right fit for your next chapter, I'd love to talk through what life here actually looks like and walk you through what's available in the market right now.
