Lake Elmo is having a moment. New schools, new restaurants, new housing communities, and a Highway 36 interchange overhaul are all in motion, and buyers are taking notice. But is it the right fit for you?

Whether you're relocating from out of state or just looking to move out of the Twin Cities, there are real trade-offs to consider. Here's an honest look at life in Lake Elmo in 2026.

The Pros

1. The Natural Beauty Is Stunning

Lake Elmo looks different from most Twin Cities suburbs. Rolling terrain, working farmland, wetlands, ponds, and wooded lots give it a character that flat, grid-planned suburbs simply can't replicate. New communities like North Star were designed to preserve and frame that scenery, with homesites oriented toward pond views and open green space.

If you've ever driven through and thought "this doesn't feel like a suburb," you're not wrong.

2. Top-Tier Schools in the Stillwater District

Lake Elmo feeds into Stillwater Area Public Schools (ISD 834), one of the most highly regarded public school districts in the state. Students benefit from strong academics, robust extracurriculars, and (starting Fall 2026) a brand-new Lake Elmo Elementary School with both an English curriculum and a Spanish Immersion program.

For families, this is often the single biggest draw.

3. Growth Without Losing Its Identity

Lake Elmo is growing strategically. Unlike some suburbs that sprawled without a plan, the city has been intentional about balancing development with character. New restaurants like The Stable Pizzeria and the Lake Elmo Creamery fit the community rather than replacing it. The upcoming Tap & Ladder taphouse in a restored historic fire station is a perfect example of growth that honors what was already there.

4. Less Traffic Than You'd Expect

Compared to western suburbs like Plymouth or Eden Prairie, Lake Elmo has stayed relatively low-traffic. The upcoming Highway 36 / Lake Elmo Avenue interchange project (breaking ground Spring 2026) will make that commuter corridor even more efficient, adding safety upgrades and improved pedestrian connections.

5. A Real Sense of Community

Lake Elmo still has the feel of a place where neighbors know each other. Community events, local sports leagues, and a tight-knit downtown give it a small-town vibe that larger suburbs have often traded away in the name of growth. Incoming developments like North Star, built around a historic dairy barn clubhouse and outdoor pool, are designed specifically to foster that connection.

The Cons

6. Getting to the Twin Cities Takes Longer Than You Think

Lake Elmo sits east of the metro, which means commuting into downtown St. Paul runs 20–35 minutes on a normal day, and longer during peak rush hours or winter weather. For daily commuters to downtown Minneapolis, you're looking at 40–55 minutes without traffic. If your office is in the western suburbs, the cross-metro drive can be inconvenient for some.

7. It Feels Rural - That's a Feature and a Bug

For some buyers, the open land, the quiet roads, and the distance from urban amenities is exactly the point. For others, it's a real adjustment. There is no Target in Lake Elmo. No Costco. The nearest major retail corridors are in Woodbury (about 10 minutes south) or Oakdale. If you're used to walkable, urban-adjacent living, Lake Elmo will feel much more remote than your used to.

8. New Construction Comes With Growing Pains

Lake Elmo's rapid growth means some infrastructure is still catching up. Road construction, utility projects, and development activity are very much ongoing. If you're moving into one of the newer communities, be prepared for construction noise and incomplete amenities in the early years. Limerick Village, for example, begins construction in Spring 2026.

9. Property Taxes and HOA Costs Add Up

Washington County is more affordable than Hennepin or Ramsey, but Lake Elmo's higher home values mean total tax bills can still be significant. Add HOA fees in the newer communities, which can range from $75 to $450/month, and the monthly cost of ownership climbs faster than the sticker price suggests.

New developments may also carry special assessments for infrastructure improvements that show up on your tax bill for years.

10. Limited Rental and Entry-Level Options (For Now)

If you're a first-time buyer or want a more affordable entry point, Lake Elmo has traditionally been a tough market. Most of the housing stock skews toward mid-to-upper price ranges. The good news: Limerick Village will bring 271 apartments and 120 senior living units to the city, plus townhomes starting at more accessible price points. The rental and entry-level landscape is changing, just not overnight.

So, Is Lake Elmo Right for You?

Lake Elmo is an excellent fit if you value:

  • Great schools and outdoor space over urban convenience

  • A quieter, community-oriented lifestyle

  • New construction with long-term appreciation potential

  • The Eastern metro's comparatively lower traffic congestion

It may not be the best fit if you need:

  • A short, easy commute to downtown Minneapolis

  • Walkable access to retail and entertainment

  • A dense, urban-adjacent feel

The honest answer is: Lake Elmo isn't for everyone, and that's part of what makes it so good for the people it is for.
