Lake Elmo: A Community on the Rise - Your Guide to New Homes, Developments, and a Thriving Lifestyle

Nestled in the heart of Eastern Suburbs of the Twin Cities of Minnesota, the charming city of Lake Elmo has long been cherished for its scenic beauty, tight-knit community, and high quality of life. But what was once a hidden gem is now capturing the attention of homebuyers and families across the state, thanks to an unprecedented wave of growth and development. From sprawling new residential communities and major infrastructure upgrades to a brand-new elementary school and a burgeoning local business scene, Lake Elmo is transforming into one of the most desirable places to live in the Twin Cities metro area. If you’re considering a move to Lake Elmo or are a current resident excited about the future, this guide will walk you through all the exciting developments shaping this vibrant community.

A Home for Everyone: New Residential Communities in Lake Elmo

Whether you’re searching for a spacious single-family home, a modern townhome, or a convenient apartment, Lake Elmo’s diverse range of new housing developments has something for everyone. The city is experiencing a residential boom, with several new communities under construction that cater to a variety of lifestyles and budgets.

Two of the most significant projects are North Star and Limerick Village. The North Star community, located just north of Stillwater Boulevard, is a master-planned neighborhood offering spacious homesites with picturesque pond views. With its final phase of homesites now available, this is a prime opportunity to build your dream home with renowned builders like Robert Thomas Homes, Creative Homes, and Hanson Builders. Residents will also enjoy a community clubhouse housed in a historic dairy barn and an outdoor pool, fostering a strong sense of community.

Meanwhile, Limerick Village is set to become the largest residential development in Lake Elmo’s history. This ambitious 79.4-acre project by Maplewood Development will introduce 679 new residential units, including 67 single-family homes, 221 townhomes, 271 apartments, and 120 senior living apartments. With the potential to welcome 1,500 to 2,000 new residents, Limerick Village will also feature an 8-acre park, making it a self-contained and family-friendly neighborhood. Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2026.

Beyond these large-scale developments, several other communities are adding to the housing mix:

Investing in the Future: Infrastructure and Parks

To support its growing population, Lake Elmo is making significant investments in its infrastructure. The Highway 36 and Lake Elmo Avenue Interchange Project, with construction beginning in spring 2026, will create a grade-separated interchange to improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance walkability and cycling in the area. This project is a game-changer for commuters and local residents alike.

In addition to the interchange, the city is implementing its 2026 Street and Utility Improvements program and the Lake Elmo West Connection Sewer Project to ensure that the city’s infrastructure can accommodate the new growth. These projects are crucial for maintaining a high quality of life for all residents.

Lake Elmo is also expanding its recreational offerings with a proposed 76-acre sports complex south of Fish Lake Park. This new facility is envisioned to include multiple softball, baseball, and soccer fields, providing state-of-the-art amenities for local sports leagues and families.

A Bright Future for Education: The New Lake Elmo Elementary School

Families with school-aged children have another reason to be excited about Lake Elmo’s future. A brand-new Lake Elmo Elementary School is set to open its doors in the fall of 2026. Located at the corner of 10th Street and Lake Elmo Avenue, this 150,000-square-foot facility will feature 53 flexible classrooms and have the capacity for 1,100 students. The school is part of the highly-regarded Stillwater Area Public Schools district (ISD 834) and will offer both a traditional English curriculum and a Spanish Immersion program.

The Heart of the Community: New Local Businesses

Lake Elmo’s downtown is also buzzing with new energy, thanks to a slate of new businesses that are quickly becoming local favorites. The Stable Pizzeria, which opened in April 2025, is already a popular spot for its New York-inspired pizza. Right next door, the Lake Elmo Creamery has been serving up delicious ice cream since its grand opening in May 2025.

And there’s more to come! The historic old fire station will soon be home to Tap & Ladder, a self-pour taphouse and casual dining restaurant. And for those craving Mexican cuisine, Machete Cocina Mexicana will be opening a second location in the former parks building. Both are expected to open in late 2026 or early 2027, adding to the vibrant and growing local dining scene.
